The Nu-Air tire range is founded on McLaren’s pioneering Semi-Pneumatic Technology. The basis of this is that a machine needs to be kept as stable as possible for operating – but also needs to have some insulation to cushion the load and minimize drastic wear on running components. The first can be achieved better by solid tires (on flat working), though pneumatic tires are the best cushions – though vulnerable to punctures. McLaren design team decided to attempt to try to balance the two requirements and mitigate the vulnerability at the same time – the great result is a flat-proof tire.

Semi-Pneumatic Technology Explained

The essential concept is a pattern of air-cells situated deep inside the tire’s radius. These cells are carefully aligned and shaped (see illustration) to internally supply a cushion similar to conventional pneumatics. The departure from normal air-filled tires is that these cells are safely placed deep within the structure, away from penetration by sharp objects on the work place floor. As an extra measure, each cell is isolated, so incursion into a one cell from the outside (which is extremely unlikely!) will not have the devastating effect as it does on ‘singular’ celled pneumatic tires – the damage is limited. And normal running will continue – on McLaren flat-proof tires.

McLaren products use carefully balanced, quality materials that take into account the type of terrain and machine they will be employed on. All the various Nu-Air lines use are produced with a rubber compound that is a richer grade than competition. For extra strength and durability go compounds that help mitigate wear, tear and combat UV degradation. These components have proved in OEM tests to outlast the competition’s equivalent tires by 3 -5 times, varying from model to model.

Our flat-proof Semi-Pneumatic Nu-Air lines are purpose-designed for specific working environments and machines, allowing maximum performance.  This includes differing tread configurations and varying widths which can also increase tire-life (for exact stats – please visit the appropriate page). That said, into these specific designs also go thought for the most flexible work capability possible.

Here are some examples of the Nu-Air range to give a broad idea of the scope we cover:

Nu-Air Super Slick (SS); tires for machines such as backhoes and wheel loaders, SS are designed mainly for running on asphalt, paving, concrete – for smooth running and minimum footprint; these tires far outlast treaded versions on hard-standing;

Nu-Air Dirt Terrain (DT); skid-steer, wheel loader, backhoe tires for off-road – dirt, sand, snow, quarries, &c;

Nu-Air All Terrain (AT); tires for wide application – on-road to moderate rough terrain use, AT tires are ideal for changing work environments;

Nu-Air Rocky Terrain (RT); the clue is in the name – if this tire can’t operate – then it’s no place for a machine to go!

We realize at McLaren sometimes there are budget constraints on projects, and certain compromises have to be made (because a profit must still be made!). Or, when less usage is required, it’s not practical or viable to buy top-of-the-line tires. For these occasions, we have Economy Line models in some parts of the range. These are products still made with the same quality and care, but they are not designed to have the same length of operating life.
